Phoenix Score Calculator

Every Pump It Up Phoenix score is judgement-weighted accuracy out of 1,000,000 — half a percent of it is combo.Phoenix and Phoenix 2 score a play identically; Phoenix 2 changed what the letters below AAA demand. This page is the formula, what each judgement costs, the letter cutoffs, and what real scores look like at every level.

The calculator

Type the counts from a result screen. Score, letter and plate update as you type.

The formula

  • A miss weighs zero — it simply removes the note from the top of the fraction.
  • The machine rounds down. Hand math that lands between two points reads one high, not the game. Against real result screens the formula is exact to ±1 point.
  • Combo counts perfects and greats only, inside the longest unbroken run. A good keeps the run alive without advancing it; a bad or a miss breaks it. That is why where a miss lands matters — one mid-chart costs several times one at the edges. The combo term rarely decides a grade until SSS or SSS+ is the target — and there a mid-song break costs up to 2,500 points, half a letter, where a break at either end costs almost nothing.
  • Notes is the chart's full judgement count — taps and hold ticks alike — so the same play quality scores the same on a 300-note chart and a 3,000-note one. โ€” about half of a modern chart is hold ticks.
  • XX and earlier had charts with optional notes — a perfect if you hit them, no cost if you missed. Phoenix removed them; every note on a modern chart counts.

What each judgement costs

Costs scale with the chart — every non-perfect divides by the note count. Pick a chart size:
Great โˆ’398 combo keeps running
Good โˆ’801 holds the combo, doesn't extend it
Bad โˆ’901 and it breaks the combo
Miss โˆ’1,000 up to −3,500 mid-combo

A miss also halves whatever combo it splits — dead-centre on 1,000 notes it costs 3,500 points, not 1,000. Edges are cheap; middles are not.

What personal bests look like

Every tracked personal best on this mix, stacked by grade band per level. The typical best at almost every level is an S or better.

The distribution leans toward SSS+ and Perfect Games at lower levels: players clearing folders push every chart in them far past a first pass, so low levels read as lamp territory rather than a picture of first attempts. Levels with fewer than 20 recorded bests are hidden.

How many notes is a level?

Judgement counts per chart, by level — the band is the middle 80% of charts, the line the median, the dots the extremes.

The extremes are real charts, not noise — the shortest and longest chart at each level.

Half the chart is holds

Hold ticks are perfects for as long as the hold is held — and from level 15 up they are about half of every chart's judgements. Hold density is one of the levers a chart is tuned with; and some charts simply are hold songs.

Low tick share is what makes a low score reachable: hold everything, good every tap, and a chart under the dashed line can pass with an F. On a typical level 18 that floor is a D — about 591,000.

Tick counts are inferred: tap counts come from community simfiles, the totals from real plays, and the difference is the ticks. Treat charts within a few percent of each other as tied — the numbers are estimates right now.
